Join us for an epic conversation between long-time friends David Shields and Bernie Herman. David and Bernie have been friends for over fifty years from the time they met as undergraduates at the College of William and Mary. Their interests and conversations have always moved in parallel tracks, including the study and sharing of traditional foodways. Ellen Kochansky, the Director of the Rensing Center, has known Bernie for over 20 years. They became acquainted when he interviewed her about her unconventional quilting. Read the interview here. David S. Shields is a Carolina Distinguished Professor of the English Language and Literature Department at the University of South Carolina and the chair of the Carolina Gold Rice Foundation. He is the author of numerous books, including Taste the State: South Carolina’s Signature Foods, Recipes & Their Stories and Southern Provisions: The Creation and Revival of a Cuisine. He is the recipient of the Southern Foodways Alliance’s Ruth Fertel Keeper of the Flame Award.
Bernie Herman, recently retired, is a George B. Tindall Distinguished Professor of Southern Studies and Folklore Emeritus University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Edward & Elizabeth Rosenberg Professor of Art History and Material Culture emeritus University of Delaware. He is the author of numerous books including A South You Never Ate. He has published essays on quilts, self-taught and outsider arts, foodways, historical archaeology, vernacular photography, and theoretical approaches to the study and interpretation of objects.
The conversation will take place at the Rensing Center Library located at 1165 Mile Creek Rd, Pickens, SC, 29671. This event is free. Space is limited, so come early to secure a seat. No RSVP necessary. David and Bernie’s books will be available for sale.
